Club Match

25/04/2012

The final match of the season was a very close affair with only 6 points separating the first 7 places. Margaret & Jean clinched top spot by 3 points over Ally & George with third place tied between Pat & Glad, Mike & Christine and Malcolm & Isobel.

The hands were also very flat tonight with not a sniff of a slam and the hands were a lot more balanced than usual.
The best HCP count was only 27 and there were only THREE hands in total with 25+ points.
So was it desperation which caused the game calls on 15 boards?

Board 13 was one of the few interesting hands, the points were split 24/16: after N passes E could pre-empt 3 hearts which would probably stop any further bidding but, even though there is only 9 HCP, it is a strong hand and is worth opening 1 heart.
Over 1 heart south is able to show the club suit and west is now able to bid 2 spades.
North should raise in clubs leaving east to ponder whether it should be a heart or spade contract.
There are 10 guaranteed tricks in either clubs or spades, 4 hearts should go off after south leads the singleton spade. 5 clubs are there if you can guess which way to play the diamonds.

Congratulations to Malcolm & Isobel who won the Handicap shield from Alan & Linda, Dave & Davie won the Match Point shield over Jim & Clinton.

Bridge Club - September 2011

The club has moved back into the Kirkwall Bowling Club for the winter session, in the past the club has closed over the summer months but this year we held 'Summer Drop-in' sessions at the Orkney Hotel.

The aim of these casual evenings was to give players opportunity to 'perfect' or try out new conventions by talking through them while playing. They also provided an easy introduction to anyone who hadn't played duplicate bridge before.
These evenings proved quite popular and we expect to run them again next summer.

In previous years our weekly matches were 'stand alone' competitions with a token prize for the winner, at the last AGM it was decided to introduce two trophies for the overall winners at the end of the season, a Match Point shield and a Handicap shield.

The results from each pairs best 14 matches would decide the winners.

Long term leaders Alan & Mike had victory snatched from them on the final evening, the good result by Bruce & Michael gave them a ½ point winning margin for the Match Point shield.

In the Handicap shield Ally & George had a 5 point lead over Alan & Linda and looked pretty safe.

The final evening again ended up a cliff-hanger, maximum points for Alan & Linda saw them both with the same final score. The final result was determined by countback in favour of Ally & George.

Shetland Inter-County 14-15th May 2011

Orkney played hosts to this years Inter-County - the 'bridgefest' weekend consisted of three events, the Team competition, a Pairs match and a Teams of Four.

The weekend kicked off with the Team competition and Orkney was hoping to return to winning ways.

At the interval the prospect didn't look good and the second session saw no improvement with Shetland coming away easy winners of this fifth annual match.

The Orkney players turned things around in the Pairs match with 3 of the top 4 places, Davie Aim & Dave Higgins winning the event for the Stewarts Rum Cup by 10 match points.

Only 1½ match points separated the next three pairs, second place went to Alan & Wilma Bichan, Shetlands Bert & Stella Robertson coming third and Jim Burgher & Clinton Rendall fourth.

The Teams of Four competition was a handicap event with the pairings for each team based on the final positions in the Pairs match.

The foursome of Shetlands Drew Tulloch & Jim Moar and Orkneys Jim Burgher & Clinton Rendall came out winners of the team shield.

The lucky recipients of the special prize were Katherine Kemp, Ella Glue, Margaret Mainland & Sheila Lyons.

Thanks go to Orkney Builders who provided the trophies for the weekend.

Aberdeen Inter-Club 12th March 2011

The Orkney club had a very enjoyable and successful trip to Aberdeen for a friendly competition with one of the Aberdeen clubs. 12 players went south, 10 of us on the overnight ferry, which was fortunately a calm crossing.

After breakfast at Linda Ross's we played 2 sessions with a break for lunch; due to the tight schedule we only played 36 boards.

The first session saw Orkney with a good lead of 6390, tiredness set in a bit in the second session but the team still maintained the good form and ended up winning by 9910 points.

We had to finish by 15:30 to give us time to get the scores finalised and then get back to ferry terminal in time for the 17:00 boat. The 6 hour trip back soon passed by playing the odd hand of bridge!

Kirkwall Ladies Bridge Club

Christmas may have been over but it did not stop some of the ladies of the bridge club donning sparkly attire at the dinner on Thursday 20 January - the President, Jean Marwick, could well have thought she was attending a masked ball (wonderful masks provided by Ella Glue).
With the snow well away, it was encouraging to have six full tables for the bridge. The hands could not have been more varied with some players enjoying good cards all night whilst others wondered if there were any face cards in the pack.
Although there were no slams bid during the evening there were a few game calls which made twelve tricks.

The Annual Valentine's Bridge Night will be held in the Kirkwall Hotel on Thursday 17 February at 7 p.m. All bridge players are welcome.

The prize winners for the evening were:-

Blue: 1st Elspeth Linklater (3630): 2nd Jean Tulloch (3560): 3rd Ann Edwards (3060)
Pink: 1st Sheila Walls (5630): 2nd Ally Kelly (3980): 3rd Christine Sinclair (3840)
